Problems getting the service history

We bought a 3 year old VW Golf in Sept 2011 from an independent dealer who was recommended to us by a friend. He did a good job of finding the car, organising a service/MOT and delivering it to us for a reasonable fee.

However, he did not provide the service log book on delivery saying that the service garage had it to stamp and would send it on in due course. It turned out that the garage 'mislaid' it so he would have to get a replacement. Time passed by with a number of plausible excuses and last September he eventually said he had the completed replacement and had posted it to us.

It never arrived. He said he would get another one which we are still waiting for. I am concerned to get the history as we may need to sell the car soon. Do I have any recourse to the dealer other than pestering him?

He was lying. But it's a bit late to do anything about this now unless you adopt the attitude that without the promised service book the car is worth £1,000 less and you sue him for that £1,000 using www.moneyclaim.gov.uk
