Is six years long enough for a fuel pump?

I've owned my (diesel) Ford Focus from new six years ago. I've always serviced it at the main dealer, but after problems starting the car, they tell me that it needs a new fuel pump costing about £1500.

Is this reasonable?

It might be. The injection pump could have been damaged by misfilling with petrol or by low lubricity diesel.
