VW Passat EGR warning light

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI 130, and the emissions workshop warning keeps coming on. I was told by the garage that the error code reported is for EGR valve. I had cleaned, but this has had no effect.

Today I had the EGR valve replaced by a friend, and the warning stayed off for about 30 miles - but now it is back again. Could you tell me what else may be causing this, if not EGR valve?

It could be a number of things, from air/vacuum pipes split/leaking to one of the Oxygen sensors.

It may be best to have a diagnostic check carried out as this should then show up a fault code (P ---- 4 numbers) This should then relate to the actual fault.
