Cheap metal tyre valve caps

My wife bought me a set of four silver metal tyre valve caps to replace my standard black ones, from the £1 shop. She thought they would match the colour of my Silver Golf Mk VI nicely.

I didn't think anything of it until attempting to inflate my tyres a few months later. I was unable to remove these caps, they were simply stuck fast, resulting in me taking the car to a tyre fitter and having the caps removed and valves replaced at a cost of £10 per tyre (£40)!

The tyre fitter stated that he had earned a few thousand pounds over the past two years from other motorists with the same problem. A costly issue to be avoided...

This is just a friendly note to possibly pass on to other readers should you see fit.

It's a common problem. Have a warning coming up in the column about this. Mixed metal corrosion causes them to fuse to the tyre valve stems.
