Should I switch to diesel, now my annual mileage has doubled?

My commute has recently become longer, and as a result my annual mileage has changed from 10,000 to 20,000 miles.

I currently have a 06-plate Volkswagen Golf 1.6FSI, which has done 50,000 miles. I regularly achieve 43mpg. However, this figure is when running on super unleaded, as it seems to give a 2-3mpg increase. And this is the fuel recommended by Volkswagen for that engine.

In your opinion, should I part-ex the car for an equivalent age/mileage Golf with the 1.9-litre TDI engine? I would rather avoid the financial outlay, but fear that I am throwing away £1000 a year on extra fuel costs. The alternative would be to keep my current car for another 2-3 years.

I wouldn't, because repairs and replacements on a diesel of this age can more than wipe out any savings made on fuel.
