Crossover or true 4X4?

I drive on some really potholed tarmac roads, as well as normal roads and motorway. The new trend of crossover vehicles can have this electronic 4wd system, but are they then just jacked up cars with normal "car" suspension?

Would a purpose built 4x4 be the same or do they have a more robust & durable suspension? I am looking to replace my 2wd Suzuki SX4, possibly with a Toyota RAV4, but am open to other suggestions please.

For rough roads I reckon the best are the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento. They just happen to be really good on rough tracks.
