Stop start technology on a Fiat 500 - is it gimmick?

My wife has recently purchased a pre reg Fiat 500 at a very good discount, my question regards the stop start system. Do you think it is a gimmick or does it have any real purpose. it strikes me that the starter motor could get an awful lot of work to do and therefore wear out more quickly thus more than cancelling out any savings in fuel. The car has now covered just over 1,000 miles and the engine is freeing up and returning over mixed driving conditions 45mpg.

My FIAT 500 is averaging 52.8mpg without stop start. If you find it a nuisance, switch it off.

Please can you tell me if you are aware of an engine management problem on the FIAT 500? I understand there have been a number of complaints. I have had a problem with my start-stop on a 1.4 Lounge.
