Keeping a hire car after a car write off - is this correct?

I need to have transport to search for a replacement car and get to work after receiving a settlement cheque for a no fault accident write off but I am being told to return it. Is this correct?

Yes. Once you receive the payout, settlement is deemed to have been reached.
