What are these Mondeo fault codes?

Engine fault codes P0251, P1211, P2288 showed up when my Mondeo diesel 2.0TDCI cut out a couple of months ago, three times within a mile after I had left the cross-channel ferry coming back from France. AA attended but it ran OK on start-up.

Two days ago, same again - this time close to home but again on a cold engine. It started again OK and I drove it home. Has not moved since Friday afternoon.

What do those codes mean and what should I be doing? I not very technical.

My son has suggested an Italian tune-up, RedX and changing to Shell V-power to clean fuel lines. It has never been mis-fuelled, is regularly serviced at an independent garage and has covered only 82,000 miles

P1211 is the code indicating that the engine has gone into limp mode.

P0251 is indicating a Fuel related problem, this could be a number of things, would suggest that you check the fuel filter/pipes for air leaks, also - have you allowed the fuel level to go very low? If so it could be related because dirt / muck may have been drawn up from the tank.

Next you may need to have a bleed off test carried out on the injectors as one or more of them may be failing.

If none of the above then it may well be that the IMV (fuel metering valve) is faulty.

There is a known fault on Mondeo's in that the fuel pump rollers and shoes fail to bed in the early part of the life.

This then shows up fault codes P0251, P1211 and P2288, however according to Ford it's only on the 2001/2002 models with build code K1-2Y.
