Buying a used second car

We need to buy a second car for commuting and occasional business trips. We already have an Audi A6 Avant as our family car, so space isn't the main priority, but I would like the best combination of value for money, running costs and driving pleasure. I really rate all modern Fords for the latter but am a bit put off by the interiors. Have had a Leon in the past which was a good car. We have had various Renaults with mixed results on reliability. I would over to get an Alfa and have long hankered after a Saab, but am concerned about reliability and resale. All signs seem to be pointing to a Focus, but would be grateful for any views. Maximum budget is £2500-3000.

The problem is the problems emerging with the Focus II. These were solved by the Focus II 2008 facelift, but they are out of your price bracket. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/focus-2004/?sec...d
The 147 is a beautiful looking car, but you'd better check that out in car by car as well. Megane II has a lot of trouble with the window electrics. A 1998-2002 SAAB 9-3 was just a Cavalier in disguise. Much better from the 2002 model.
