Buying a nearly new small car.

My wife currently drives a Suzuki Alto manual bought in 2005 with 45,000 on the clock. It has been a great little car and ideal for her then short commute and general running around. She now works at Reading University with a 60 mile round trip. This includes dual carriage way and M4 motorway. The Suzuki is a bit underpowered and light for this journey. She would like something else, possibly a five door Ford Focus, which can be one or two year old and less than £10,000. We also have an X reg Vauxhall Astra automatic and she would preferably like an automatic also. Are there any particular Focus models to look out for, or anything else similar you would recommend?

With a £10k Focus automatic, she can expect to use nearly twice as much fuel, unless she can find a 2.0 Powershift auto, as these will do 45-50mpg.
