Is my tank bigger than the manual says?

I filled up at a Shell station with V-Power following you advice. The range indicator was 60 miles before fill-up indicating 7-8 litres of fuel remaining, and the fill up sign had not yet appeared. The tank took 48.38 litres, much to my surprise as its capacity is 45 litres.

I raised this with Shell UK customer complaints who called me back within 24 hours, as promised. They said the pump had been checked and found accurate and that the excess over tank capacity might be due to the filler area and they also said something about vapour area. Is this a reasonable explanation? I have never before been able to put more than 42 litres into the tank, even when it showed 20 miles on the tange indicator.

Yes. Tanks always have a greater capacity than the volume in the manual.
