What SUV for shooting, hunting and fishing?

In 2008 you advised the then new Subaru Forester diesel. Due to the waiting list, instead we bought an XT 2.5 petrol.

Three years on, it is summed up after 18,000 miles a year as brilliantly fast, comfy, gizmo rich, wholly bulletproof, go anywhere - but thirsty, wind noisy and in need of an update.

Now, nearing retirement and thinking more importantly about economy, would you still recommend it in its class? What others are serious contenders please?

As a long term purchase, I don't recommend diesel if it can be avoided for less than 15k - 20k miles a year. That said I was extremely impressed by the Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 diesel, which is chain cam, handles brilliantly for an SUV and in my hands did 45mpg. Also look out for the new Mazda CX-5, which promises much.
