Will we see any benefit from using the Toyota Yaris Hybrid over long journeys?

We are thinking of trading our Toyota Yaris diesel next year for the new Yaris Hybrid, which is coming soon. However, talking to our mechanic and the Toyota salesperson, we are advised that benefit from a hybrid will be achieved only if we drive lots of short distances. As we do 15,000 miles per year with a long journey most months (in excess of 300 miles) then we wonder if there is any benefit to be gained by swapping our diesel car for a hybrid.

I drove my father's Auris HSD 300 miles two months ago and averaged 62.3mpg. So they can work well over a long distance. My dad’s is now averaging 63mpg on his shorter local runs. They are actually much simpler than a modern diesel with less to go wrong.
