Can our three-year-old grandson travel in the front seat of our MX-5 without the airbag disabled?

I understand that a child cannot travel in the front seat unless the airbag is disabled (our grandson isn't three yet). Our 2002 MX-5 has not got a disabling switch. Our Mazda dealer couldn't help, saying the car is old. So have you any ideas please?

It's no problem unless a rear-facing baby seat is fitted. The airbag is more likely to save the life of a forward facing 3-year-old than it is to injure him, but it is always advisable to move his seat back as far as it will go away from the airbag.
