Is £2,800 a reasonable price for repairing my father's Rover 75's automatic gearbox?

My 88-year-old father was towing his caravan when the automatic gearbox of his 10-year-old Rover 75 2.0-litre turbodiesel failed. His Rover agent in Grantham has quoted him £2,800, which seems very high to me. Am I just out of touch with garage bills, or do you think this might be too high?

This is a JATCO automatic transmission and the specialists in rebuilding them are www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk and www.webvert.co.uk. A rebuild is usually about £1,500 plus the cost of removing and refitting the transmission. Reconditioned Jatco transmissions can also be sourced from: www.xpartautoservicecentre.com, which is probably where the Rover specialist will get it from, along with most other parts for 75s.
