Do the runflat tyres fitted to the BMW 118d SE have a shorter lifespan than conventional tyres?

I have recently acquired a 2007 BMW 118d SE Auto - the so-called ‘Efficient Dynamics’ version. Initial impressions are all positive: handling, performance, autobox, finish and particularly economy (45-50mpg) all excellent. It's not spacious, of course, but there's only two of us. The ride is firm and suits us well enough, though from reviews I had read I had expected a much harder ride, due in part to the runflat tyres. So the only real reservation or concern I had prior to purchase was not so much the ride quality but the fact that such tyres cannot be repaired and are said to have a shorter life span, and may have uneven tread wear - which together must mean greater expense than with conventional tyres. Are you able to comment?

The ES and SE have the smallest wheels with deepest profile tyres, hence the best ride quality. Runflats can usually be repaired if not 'run flat' for long, but the carcass needs to be inspected and this takes longer than simply changing the tyres. They can have a shorter lifespan, though on this car 20,000 miles is typical.
