MPG not what we expected

We purchased a brand new Vauxhall Astra at the end of last year (2011).

The combined economy figure quoted was 51mpg. Upon driving the car the average has been around 25mpg. Comparing this to other cars I have driven (That reflects driving style and local elements) I consider this unacceptable.

For example, a 2003 Jaguar XJ8 4.2 averaged 21.7mpg, a Chrysler 300c managed 25mpg, and my wife's Nissian Qashai 1.6 petrol achieves 31mpg.

I reported the low mpg to the dealer within 72 hours of purchase and again 2 months after.

The dealer doesnt want to know until the car has done 2000 miles (900 miles as of today) and have quoted £80 if no fault is found. As the MPG is way off can I obtain a full refund under the sale of goods act?

No. These are EC certification figures for tax. They bear no resemblance to what normal drivers can expect. See www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg
