Winter tyres on automatics

I know from your column in the DT that you are an advocate of winter tyres. My wife and I have now rationalised our transport arrangements from a Landrover Defender 110 LWB (mine) and a Corsa 1.4 automatic (hers) to a new Toyota Yaris 1.3 CVT Multidrive (ours). Talk about making the supreme sacrifice for your wife!

With the Defender we have not had any concerns, other than the usual, about driving in adverse conditions and the Corsa has stayed in the garage.

I would appreciate your advice on whether it is worthwhile to consider winter tyres for the new CVT automatic Yaris and if so, can you recommend a tyre type ? I can understand the logic with manual gearboxes but with all the 'smart' facilities built into modern automatics (ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, VSC and TRC) are we into a situation where we are in conflict with these facilities by using winter tyres?

I understand from the vehicle spec' that the standard wheels are 15" alloys.
