Crunchy brakes

At the end of June we bought a Jaguar XF 3-litre petrol on an 08 plate from a Jaguar main dealer.

When we reverse out of our garage and down the fairly steep slope of our drive, the brakes make a loud graunching noise and the pedal feels a bit soft.

Once on the flat, we must brake again in drive within about 200 yards, and the graunch occurs again. After that, the brakes appear to be fine. We got the garage to look at the car but they couldn't find anything wrong with it - I doubt if they could replicate the reverse down a slope from a level start. My husband says that if they say the car is fine, then it is, and won't take the matter further with Stratstone.

I wonder if you would be able to offer me any advice as to whether you think I should push for further inspection - have you come across this problem before maybe? Thank you so much for any help you can give!

Standard overnight corrosion on the discs. The graunching is it being wiped off by the pads. Actually better you start your run with a reverse brake because that makes sure the pads clean the rust off the rear discs. If you only drive forwards, the pads rarely touch the rear discs and corrosion can eat into them.
