Used cars with low fuel consumption

We have owned a 1989 Volvo 740 estate from new and now want to buy a relatively new used car (or a very low priced new car) to replace it. The new car must have a low fuel consumption. Medium sized, well protected, good seats, quiet at speed, estate or hatchback 5 door, petrol or diesel. I have looked at the Skoda Fabia (1.2 TDI CR Greenline II), the Kia c'eed and want to get something for under £12,000. What would you reccomend?

I don't recommend these super low CO2 diesels generally because long term running costs of repairs such as DPFs, DMFs, EGRs, timing belts and turbos outweigh any saving on fuel. I think you'll be better off with something like a Mazda 2 1.2TS2.
