Surprise call following reporting an accident to the police

My parked car was recently hit and the driver did not stop but a neighbour took the number plate

I phoned the police and reported what had happened.

A couple of days later I received an unsolicited call from a company with a pre-recorded message saying that as I had been involved in an accident did I want legal advice.

How did they get my details including phone number other than from the police?

Are you aware of this and if so is it not contrary to data protection laws?

Yes it is contrary to data protection. If you reported the incident to your insurer or broker then someone there will have divulged the information. Report it to the Data Protection Registrar.
