Not getting through

My wife's 2005/55 BMW 120d manual is now four years old and has covered 42k miles. She has been delighted with it until now. However about 4 months ago the engine cut out without warning whilst she was driving - and has done so about 8 times since. There is no common aspect - the speed has varied, different drivers etc. It has upset my wife who is worried that it will cut out whilst overtaking or in the outside lane of a dual carriageway. We booked the car into the local dealer (Chandlers) that has serviced it from new. They reported that there was no fault recorded on the car's computer. They then offered for one of their staff to drive it home that evening to test it - but of course the car behaved perfectly. They then offered to do the same over a weekend with the same result. I was then told that the BMW central database indicated that a sensor on a fuel pump might be to blame as it caused the engine to cut out in a similar way - but it would normally be logged as a fault on the onboard computer. BMW offered to replace this sensor at a cost of £400+ but without any guarantee that it would cure the problem. I felt this was too high a cost without any certainty of success. So it cost me £100 all to no avail. Have you heard of similar problems on this model? My wife is rapidly losing confidence in the car and I am not sure how to resolve the matter. I do hope that you can help?

When something like this happens the usual reason is failure of the fuel tank sender pump. Could be the pump, could be the relay, or could simply be a bad earth to either. This is never recorded by diagnostics that can only reveal that fuel is not getting though but cannot always tell the technician why not.
