Key Note screech

I have just bought a second -hand 08 reg. Nissan Note from a branch of Evans Halshaw. After it had been to various branches of the company, and having completed all the paperwork and paid for it etc I was given one key for the vehicle. On asking where the other key was I was given various excuses as to why there was only one key i.e it only came with one key, the previous owner must have lost one, broken one etc. etc. I pointed out that I was not happy about this as the second key could be used at a later date to steal the car. They said they would contact the previous owner but I doubt they will, all I will probably get is a repeat of the above excuses. What are your thoughts on this situation and how should I proceed?

If you have already taken delivery you need to send a letter by recorded delivery to the dealer principal of the Evans Halshaw dealership stating that you took delivery under protest as the car was incomplete and therefore "not of satisfactory quality" because it came with only one key. Then state you give the dealership the opportunity to replace the missing key or take the car back and give you your money back. You'll soon get an offer of a second key, though only a remote key if the standard spec of the car is two remotes. Most new cars come with one remote and one standard key. The possibility that someone else still has a key to your car cannot be resolved other than by changing all the locks, which is not a "reasonable" thing to ask.
