Well, well, well

I can’t see the point of space-saver emergency wheels. A wheel well has to be large enough to take the road wheel when the space-saver is fitted so they do not save space. Also, an alloy road wheel only weighs 50% more than the space-saver so they save little weight. I believe the real purpose is to keep the initial car price as low as possible. I have replaced my space-saver wheel with a full sized wheel to avoid the 100 mile journey at 50mph problem.

The best answer is runflat tyres. Better still runflat tyres and carrying
a spare runflat tyre. But manufacturers are hell bent on removing spare wheels from the specification of cars so as to be able to package them better and build them more cheaply. It isn't just the cost of the spare wheel that adds to the cost of the car, it is the cost of accommodating it. That's their argument, anyway.
