Family are territory

My daughter is looking to buy a suitable vehicle for her family of 3 children and husband (MPV or 4WD, diesel or petrol). Reliability and running costs are, of course, paramount. Use will be largely local shopping, ferrying kids to and from school etc, so petrol may suffice, although occasional/fairly infrequent towing of medium sized caravan for holidays etc. Flexible luggage space and at least 5 decent sizes seats required. Citroen seems to be the favoured MPV per JD Power survey, but are they reliable enough? Perhaps better with Japanese/German. Your comments/advice appreciated.

For this sort of use, petrol is better than diesel. Toyota Verso 1.8 Valvematic, Renault Grand Scenic 1.4TCE, (unfortunately the Ford S-Max does not come with any petrol engines as good as the other two.) Tests and video tests of the Verso and Grand Scenic at www.honestjohn.co.uk
