Knotting in particulate

A lot of new diesel cars have particulate filters fitted in order to make them 'cleaner'. Am I correct in thinking that this would make them unsuitable for Mr and Mrs Average Driver, doing their 10,000 annual miles, with a fair amount of town driving, included?

Yes. Petrol better unless the car is doing about 17,500 miles a year or more. Petrol engines have become more efficient. And petrol is cheaper and will remain cheaper than diesel. The most efficient petrol engines these days are small 1.2s or 1.4s with water-cooled turbos.
