Vol no vo

I own a year 2000 Volvo V70 Estate, and am having trouble starting. Sometimes the engine will fire and run for about two seconds and then cut out as though it was starved of fuel. At this point if I lock the doors with either the key fob or the key and then unlock the doors it will start and run but not always. Sometimes it will take two or three times to get it to go. I think it is something to do with the immobiliser but I understand it is not possible to disconnect the damn thing.
Your comments on this problem would be appreciated.

Possibly a faulty fob. Or something else dangling on the same keyring. You should never attach anything apart from the car key to a car key fob.
