Motorists shouldn't get too enamoured with the recent government pronouncement of “Intelligent Speed Adaptation” GPS speed control for cars. Sponsored anti-motoring organisations such as BRAKE are enthusing about the speed control capability of cars operated by GPS to be limited by its engine ECU (engine control unit). Their juvenile excitement of being able to control other people’s car speeds is based purely upon misread accident statistics purporting to show a high incidence of speed-related accidents. When examined forensically the truth shows a minimal speed involvement but, when confronted with this, BRAKE disseminates the information into Primary and Secondary causes and will ignore the frequent primary cause of an accident being a pedestrian blindly walking into the road, and allocate the accidents cause to the secondary characteristic of a car "speeding" a couple of mph over the limit. Although promoted along the lines of "never pick up a speeding fine again" this GPS engine control sprat to catch a mackerel promotion has a more devious agenda. I frequently work with firms who had this GPS control capability 6 years ago, they had 5 experimental car models being reviewed and although successfully demonstrating it could be done, they themselves considered it would not be implemented by the government purely because of the loss of revenue from the speeding (safety) cameras employed throughout the country. However this loss of this many hundreds of millions of pounds revenue would be dwarfed by the revenue able to be enjoyed by a GPS controlled road pricing and charge system. To enable this, GPS control and monitoring of cars and vehicles has to be accepted as a controlling factor (along with the consequential loss of freedom of individuals that would ensue). This trumpeting of a supposed saving in lives and accidents is merely this governments latest attempt to finesse the acceptance of GPS control into cars which can then be high jacked into a UK wide road pricing system and the consequential huge increase in operating costs to the vehicle operating public. Accompanying this governments huge appetite for OUR money, they would then know precisely where you and your vehicle travel, when and for how long. This coupled with your phone GPS trace could be as near as any society could get without ourselves being chipped. Wake up!

Yet again, a man who has devoted his life to socialist politics and who has never driven (due to a vision problem) sees motorists as the cash cow to provide the funds to rescue his administration from his disastrous financial miscalculations. And in falling prey to the manufacturer lobbyists of the ISA equipment (who stand to make vast fortunes at our expense) he has made another financial error: the risk of liability. If a car is partially controlled by this system and a crash results, then the government that imposed this control over the car is liable, not the driver. Though, no doubt, yet another change of laws would render the government not liable. So just as you are held liable for the DVLA failing to register a change of vehicle keepership when you send it to them, you would also be held liable for this new system crashing your car while rendering you helpless behind the wheel.
Unfortunately, after years of bashing by both conservative and labour governments, the population is no too docile to demonstrate against its exploitation.
