Tip top

We are reluctantly considering parting with our much-loved 1998 Mercedes SL280 convertible with its own hard top for reasons of cost and practicality, and since we have now bought a Ford Focus for our main use, we only need a 2nd car for occasional purposes. What can you recommend in a small car with low running costs, insurance and road tax but which has a luxury element at the top of its range that we could lookout for to buy 2nd hand? Our budget is around £3,000.

Yesterday at auction a 2002/51 Peugeot 206 1.6S Coupe Cabrio with 54,000 miles sold for £3,100. That meets the brief, but obviously I cannot guarantee that it would be reliable.
