Under new management

I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla T2 D-4D with 61,000 miles. The engine management system recently failed and I was quoted £1,060 to replace it by my local Toyota dealer. Fortunately I had taken out extended warranty cover provided by Toyota and this covered the repair. In discussing the problem with friends a number commented that this unit can sometimes be reconditioned much cheaper than the replacement figure quoted. I do appreciate that this may depend on the exact nature of the problem but do you know if there are any private concerns who might undertake this type of work. I am very pleased with the service I have received from Currie Motors in North London.

Yes. There's a FAQ answer about ECUs, chipping, etc at
www.honestjohn.co.uk Quite often the ECU is not faulty. The fault is only some moisture in the multi-pin connector. Replacing the ECU replaces the wet connector and the problem is solved. But probably could have been fixed anyway with the aid of a hairdryer.
