Inexpensive jeep

I will soon be changing my car and will have £25k-£30k to spend on a new or almost new vehicle. I live in a farmhouse that can only be approached by a single-track lane of about 1/3 mile. The nearest town is down a steep secondary road, whilst the nearest motorway, which I access most days, is across an open moorland road with numerous tight bends and sharp gradients. I believe a four-wheel drive is most suitable and over the past 4 years have driven the Lexus 'jeep' (3.5 petrol auto) and now a Honda CRV (2.0 petrol manual). I found the Lexus a really class car but poor on petrol consumption and cumbersome in the town/city. The Honda comes out better on those two measurements and has performed well during the current spell of snow and ice. In truth it is less luxurious, but more than adequate. In my mind, I have narrowed my choice down to a second Honda or the Hyundai Sante Fe. I am waiting to test drive the CRV 2.2 diesel automatic and will also be arranging to test drive the Hyundai. I understand both have had a makeover for 2010. I would like to revert to an automatic although that is not the be all and end all. I am open to either diesel or petrol. I will probably keep the vehicle for 3 or 4 years. I drive circa 20,000 miles per year split equally between work and pleasure. I would very much welcome your opinion between the Sante Fe and the CRV, or indeed an alternative recommendation.

Latest Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 diesel auto and KIA Sorento 2.2 diesel auto tested and video tested at: www.honestjohn.co.uk Really excellent. The new CR-V 2.2 diesel auto isn't particularly low emission. The RAV-4 2.0 Valvetronic petrol CVT auto is lower CO2 and more economical than the RAV-4 2.2 diesel automatic. But if you don't need an auto, it’s worth remembering that Land Rover has been offering cut price Freelander II 2.2 'black and 'white' diesels at just
£19,500.
