Bad news to brake

I have a 2006 Volvo S40 with 1.6 diesel engine. You suggested this engine in preference to 2.0 litres. It has been economical (average of 48mpg for mixed motoring) and very satisfying to drive. In the past you have advised changing the engine oil more frequently than at the manufacturer recommended interval, this being 12 months or 12,500 miles for the Volvo. The oil to be used is 5w - 30w synthetic.

It's not critical, but this particular engine will benefit from 6,000 mile and filter changes. I just had 14 months with a Focus ECOnetic with the same engine and managed 55mpg, so better than 48 is possible without having to drive too slowly. Just avoid having to brake as much as possible and don’t try to maintain speed up motorway inclines.
