Four by flaw

As some manufacturers fit bigger and bigger wheels as standard, ride quality gets worse and worse. We live in a part of the country prone to flooding, and so we have a 4x4 for its 'wading' ability. The current shape Range Rover was originally fitted with 17" wheels, the last one we had came on 18" wheels, and now they are fitted with 19" wheels which ruin the ride. I recently tried a Discovery with its new diesel engine, which in a high trim level also comes with 19" wheels. Although the ride is better than the Range Rover, it would benefit from smaller wheels with deeper tyres, and so I called Land Rover customer services to see if I could specify them. They could not tell me, and was told I must ask a dealer. The more mature motoring journalists are starting to question the manufacturers 'bling' wheels policies, and the effect they have on ride quality. One of the problems, I gather, is the trend towards fitting big brakes and callipers (for anything other than supercars they are totally unnecessary), which need big wheels to go around them. Certainly that is what my Land Rover Dealer is telling me. What do you think?

You're right. It's true that the bigger the rims, the bigger diameter
brake discs can be fitted. But, since no one with a brain is going to be
racing Disco 4s, the last thing they need is big brakes, huge wheels and 40 profile tyres, especially in the snow. Do yourself a favour, save a lot of unnecessary expense and take a look at the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe:

That's seriously impressive, comes on 235/60 R18 tyres that ride speed cushions well and has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.
