Recently while in British Columbia, Canada, I rented a Ford Escape Limited. It had a 3-litre V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission with a low ratio for difficult terrain and permanent 4WD. It was about the size of an old model Freelander, which I once owned much to my regret (the worst car I've ever had). I looked them up while there and found that new, on the road, they were about $26,000 Canadian or £16,000 at current exchange rates. I was most impressed over 2,000 miles and wonder if they are available here. If so, I presume, they would be double the price.

The previous model Escape was in the UK from 2001 - 2003, badged as the Ford Maverick, with the same 3.0 litre 24v V6 but less gears in the transmission. The new one is available in the USA as a hybrid. But if you want a really good SUV, check out the 2010 model Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2CRDI.It looks the same as before, but has a new chain cam ‘R-Type’ engine with 40 more bhp bringing it up to 194bhp, 422Nm torque and either a 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto. The manual is 176g/km CO2 and 41.5mpg; the auto 7 seater is 197g/km and 38.2mpg. Prices from £21,500, with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. And really nice to drive.
