Which 4x4?

Like most of the country we've had severe problems getting around in recent weather conditions. We live on the southern side of Dartmoor, about halfway up the moor, with an uphill lane as a drive, with a choice of sharp turns at the top - either uphill or downhill. The slopes are tarmac, but steep and never gritted and the conditions started off as snow and ended up as virtually sheet ice.

We're now seriously considering a smallish 4x4. The question is do we go for a more expensive model (e.g Freelander 2 with terrain control features) or a cheaper alternative without (e.g Subura Foresters or Honda CRV)?
