Volkswagen reveals five-door Up

Volkswagen has confirmed that the five-door version of its new Up will go on sale in the UK in the second half of 2012. Prices haven't been announced but it's likely to be only a few hundred pounds more than the three-door Up which starts at £7995.

As the pictures show, it shares the same look as the three-door and is the same compact size. However the rear seats are set slightly higher to give those sitting in the back a better view out. Like the three-door is has a 251-litre boot and is powered by the same efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine - capable of almost 70mpg according to the official figures.

The new Up can be ordered with Volkswagen's clever City Emergency Braking system. This uses sensors to scan the space ahead of the vehicle, applying the brakes automatically if it detects that the car is about to hit an object. Best of all it costs just £225 which is far cheaper than these systems have been in the past. The Up is also very safe and has a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

Other new technology includes the Maps & More infotainment system. This is a removable device that was developed to organise navigation, telephone, information and entertainment. It connects with the car’s systems and can be used to view vehicle information, such as the display of the parking sensors (where fitted). The system is standard on the High up! model and above, and optional on the rest of the range.
