Renault Scenic 1.5 DCi Dynamique - Renault Scenic 1.5 DCi Noisy Suspension - Baffled! - simbiantbeing

Hi All.

I am hoping someone has had the same problem as me.

Our Scenic has the most annoying noise when going over speed bumps or undulating roads when the suspension has to travel any distance. Its almost like a loud creaking/squelching/graunching noise and is very very loud from both outside and inside the car and sometimes the noise reverberates under the drivers footwell. I have replaced the Lower arms and bushes, the struts, top mounts, droplinks, a drumstick, and have disconnected the anti roll bar and have proven it's not that either.

Running out of options now!! What on earth is causing this noise?

The only thing left to test is the steering rack - could it be this??

Thanks all.

Squelching noise is intriguing, have you bounced the car by hand to see if its a shocker on the way out, probably not that so...

get a can of waxoyl and on a dry day when the car isn't caked in salt give the whole of the suspension and anywhere elese suspect a good sloshing in the stuff, preferably with a sprayer, it shuts most suspension creaks up rather well.

under the drivers footwell, could it be the subframe flexing and rubbing against the floorpan.

thats my ideas used up

Hi There.

The shocks are new and I cant make the noise by hand. Needs much more suspension travel than that - although the noise can be made hitting a sharp bump in the road that doesnt involve a lot of travel - but the car is picky with it's choice of bumps in that situation! We have greased up all the bushes too and the underside of the car should never rust with the amount of oil under there now!

I really am stumped by this. A flexing subframe - sounds scary!

Is the steering rack connected to the subframe and does it move with the suspension?

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea, helped a mate check his fuses through the keyhole that passes for the underbonnet access, that one time was enough to put me off the car for life, sorry.

Best of luck.

Suspension top mounts

Exhaust mountings

Engine mountings

gearbox mountings.

All you need is a little sideways movement for engine and gearbox to foul body.. and make odd sounds.

You really need a ramp and car raise up with all wheels of ground and check all suspension travle properly. with a breaker bar.

Well, it's back at Renault today. I believe they are investigating the steering rack now. I just know that it will come back still broken and they will say they are stumped.

At this rate I will end up with no hair and a scenic with every suspension part replaced - and it still will make the noise.

I suppose it could be a track rod ball joint at the inboard end where it connects to the rack. Especially if a rack boot has failed in the past and some grot got into the joint.

Just had a call from Renault - They claim they've fixed it - After 4 checks of the Anti Roll bar, and saying it's fine, they claim it was that all along! I'll beleive it when i see it!

Hi Simbiantbeing, Was the creaking noise the anti-roll bar after all? I have exactly the same problem with my car...
