Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - ollie118

Bought a 2002 Ford Mondeo 2.0 Litre Zetec TDci just shy of 60,000 miles in april 2011 from a local second hand car dealership and have had countless problems since. To list a few; smoking exhaust, knocking sound, damaged window seal, faulty horn and more.

Though the latest problem, seems to be the worst. As of yesterday (28/08/2011) the glow plug light has started to flash. I have not driven the car since I nursed it home that evening.

After getting home from work this evening I went to start the car to make sure it wasn't a computer glitch.

On turning the ignition the car fails to start, at the same time pushing out a lot of smoke. On the third attempt the car started, however felt very "juddery" at the same time.

My question is firstly what the problem is likely to be?

Secondly where I stand in terms of possibly returning the car or meeting some form of agreement with the dealership as the problems have been consistently occurring since purchasing the car

your starting prob ( failing to start...3rd attempt....smoke....rough knocking and juddery when it does start) is classic glow plug failure in summer conditions, if it was mid winter at the moment you would find that it wont start at all. sounds like your relay is kaput or could be failure of 3 glow plugs which is what the warning light is about, sort that first then take it from there. To test properly you need to remove each plug to see if they are getting red hot,. although you can use a test lamp to see if there is any current to the plugs, removal n test is the correct procedure.

I doubt very much if its the glow plugs classic signs of the egr failing along with the turbo and actator.Sounds like a total bag of bones take it back.

If your glow plug light is flashing it's a glow plug fault, if the smoking etc doesnt get better as the engine warms up then your egr valve maybe sticking, this is very common on the mondeos and focus of that year and before

Opppps dunno why it's shown my reply 5 times sorry

Sorry but you're wrong - the flashing glowplug light has almost certainly nothing to do with faulty glowplugs - google it and be amazed. Its almost certan to be an engine management problem - I should know - I recently bought a 52 plate TDCi and the glowplug light started flashing yesterday. After reading this forum and others online it booked into the local garage for a diagnostic check. It had been running ok up until yesterday when the light started flashing but this morning would barely start and the ominous smoke from the exhaust also started. Looks like ther's some kind of ignition problem, hopefully something like a dodgy sensor but a lot of people are reporting far worse problems from these exact symptoms - injectors goosed, fuel pumps, turbos - the list goes on. I'll keep you posted on what the diagnostic check finds but, like many others on here, I won't be advising the purchase of this type of engine to anyone. When its running well, its fabulous - good performance and economy - but it looks like the cons outweigh the pros in the long run.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - smads
The glowplug light is fed from your glowplug circuit, a problem on that circuit would flag up by a flashing light, and will cause insufficent heat in the cylinders, causing failing to start black smoke etc. If a engine sensor this will flag up by a ecu light on the dash. Ive had 2 mondeos and had the problems described first time was a glow plug 2nd was the timed relay not holding long enough and on my second mondeo egr stuck open causing smoke and bad running

First and easiest DIY is to take the EGR off. These also suffer from wiring loom chafing from the top pulley - check this as it will cause injector problems, leading to starting faults.

If you read the manual or look at the wiring diagram you will find the glow plug warning light is wired as such that any poblems with emiisions will cause it to flash or remain on ,since they used this process on Fords I have never seen one that was caused by the glow plugs.I suggest you look at the wiring diagram before you make rash statements.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - smads
I have, that's why I made the statement and know what mondeos are common fo, both my mondeos suffered glow plug circuit problems, a previous poster had completely ruled out a glow plug problem why? On a diesel it's the easier thing to rule out that's why I mentioned it
Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - Collos25

If you disconnect the glow plugs with the ambient temp above 18degree c then it will start and run without any problems any smoke is poduced buy a faulty EGR,Turbo,Actuator or dirty inlet manifold your more likely to cure the problem by changing the brake lamp bulbs as you are the glow plugs.I suggest you look at the wiring diagram again.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - smads
But the ambient temp isn't 18oc I got up at 6 this morning and it was 4 oc if my glowplugs were faulty my car would start but run rough his problems starting getting worst on the 28th the mornings have got colder, I'm not disagreeing about the egr that's why I mentioned it earlier
Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - smads
Or sometimes the glow plug really doesn't energise or drops out early, to be honest none of us could diagnose the fault without the car in front of us, me personally would check the glowplug side first as if it's like my 1.8 mondeo the egr is part of the manifold

EGR on a 2.0 Ford diesel can be changed in 15 minutes - very easy job and whilst it off it's also worth changing the hose which serves it as this splits.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - Collos25

You really need to understand the role of the glow plugs and how the circuit works, the flashing glow plug light is common to many faults just simplifies the wiring and limits the number of warning lights.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - smads
I do understand the role glow plugs play in aiding a diesel to start I driven diesels most of my life, I also know when my egr valve was stuck it didn't show up as a glow plug flashing, but when I had a glow plug go and my car struggled to start It did or when the glow plug relay dropped out early causing not enough heat in the cylinder it also did.

i have started having this problem on my 2005 2.0 tdci mondeo. on start up the heater plug light flashes and the car drives very sluggish, but only occasionally...

sometimes it starts fine, but if the revs go fairly high [maybe about 3,000] or hard excelleration then the light flashes and the car again runs rough. it feels like the turbo has gone, but may be running poorly for another reason.

i can understand if its the heater plugs or the other suggestions in the thread, but why would it be an intermittent problem. the air temprature while this has been happening has varied from summer temps, to frosty days, so a little unsure...

any help or suggestion welcome.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - Collos25

Egr valve requires cleaning or the turbo actuator has cooked itself the latter is very expensive due to the fact it can only be bought with the turbo.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - baitman

...and that would be intermittent?

so not glow plug. it does start ok, btw.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - Collos25

Either depending on how bad they were,a good test is if your light is on put your fingure on the activation arm of the actuator and put some pressure on it the light should go out if its the actuator. The EGR is easy to get to fully remove it and give it a good clean along with the plastic inlet manifold.

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - baitman

you will have to excuse my lack of knowledge, here...

what is the EGR, and where will i find it. is it easy to remove and clean out.

edit...

just found some stuff on t'interweb, looks like it might be a job for the local mechanic. oops!

Ford Mondeo - Glow Plug Light Flashing - baitman

ok, here is an update...

my brother is a a keen diy mechanic so when he came to visit i mentioned this problem. he checked out a couple of pages on google to suss out the layout of the EGR valve, we bought some carb cleaning spray and had a go.

the egr was easy to find after removal of the plastic engine cover. the access id quite good, at the front top left in the engine bay. we only had to remove two nuts front, two nuts rear, and a large jubillee clip, then a vacuum hose and two electric conections.

the egr came out very easily. it was seriously caked in carbon soot. we cleaned it all off dry, then used the carb cleaner to soften and remove the tougher bits. we had to make a small wire scrapper from a piece of coat hanger to get into the corners.once that was clean we checked up the plastic cover between egr and the valves [dont know the name or how better to describe] and there was some further deposits to remove. you could just about clean them out with a finger and a clean rag. a little squirt of carb cleaner and a last wipe removed the last traces.

after re-assembly i tried to start the car. there were a couple of little coughs that had me worried, then it fired up ok. the flashing heater plug light was still on, but after running up the road i turned the ignition off and re-started and the heater light didnt re-appear. i was now able to put my foot down and the power is back. started from cold just fine this morning, zero celcius.

very pleased. thanks for the advice chaps. this is not a major gagage jobbie.i am guilty of not doing regular oil and filter changes, so this might well have been the source of the proble, i also dont drive the car long distances as i used to do and diesels prefer to be driven until fully warm to keep the soot from building up.

i will be doing an oil change including a full flush, oi,l fuel and air filters, then adding some 'forte' diesel treatment [recommended by the brother] to clear out and remnants of the carbon/soot.

thanks again Bro!!!

Hi, similar problem any thoughts?

Driving away, same light started flashing, no more acceleration even though the engine didn't cut out. I pulled over switched the engine off and on again. No problem since. First time it's happened since i bought it last Monday. Happened today only.

Thoughts?

Sometimes between first and second, even second to third when I'm accelerating up hill or turning a corner the car kangaroos a little. Which makes my foot bounce on the pedal, which makes it worse!

All the thoughts are wriitten abpve if you care to read plus if you google the site you will see a comprhensive list of problems and solutions regarding this fault.
