I'm shortly to part-ex my vehicle for a nearly new vehicle from a main dealer. I am unsure if the dealer will tax the car for 6 or 12 months. My past experience's have been that it has been just 6 months tax. My part-ex has 7 months tax left, so should I claim it back leaving the dealer with no tax on the vehicle? My car also has 2/3's of a tank of petrol.

If its nearly new then surely it wil have the remainder of the 12 months you get with a new car? If in any doubt what you will get then ask! Just call him and ask the question rather than expect one thing and receive another on the day.

Just take your old tax disc off when you drop off the car to collect your new one and reclaim your unused months. I did this when i sc***ped mine last May.

So your car has fuel in the tank? use it or lose it really.

Have you asked for a full tank of fuel? Its very rare these days to get much fuel with a new car as every £ of fuel in they put in the tank for you comes out of the profit for that car so they will give you the min they can and frankly, can you blame them? If it really bothers you to give them that much fuel then delay picking up the car a few days until youve used it all but is it really that important?

on the tax refund form (easy to download and print from dvla site) it states that you must be the current owner to reclaim a tax refund and motor traders and fleet managers cannot reclaim so claim it back yourself.I expect motor traders will manage to find a way around this but it would be against the law for them to do so.

Yes.What is the point of leaving your tax on the car if the trader cant legaly cash it in as it will probably stand unsold on a forecourt until it runs out.The trader may want the tax so the car will be easier to sell on but that is not your problem .

we traded in my subaru impreza last month for a v40 volvo and the volvo dealer actually told us to send the tax back as he couldn't, and being an 03 plate impreza the car was to old for him to sell on and would go straight to auction..

the subaru still had 10months tax, and as said above the rebait form can be downloaded off the internet. attach the old tax disk and hey presto. the rebait was enough to pay for 12 months ticket on the new one..and also enough change for a couple of take aways...

the dealer also said remove any extras as again it didn't effect the trade in value..so all the silly expensive dealer extras from mud flaps to carmats to headlight protectors where all sold on flea-bay..and the car was dropped off running on fumes...the dealer line for selling a car thats also got no fuel was insurance issues..."having cars full of fuel was a fire hazard"...mind you i think as said above a lot full of cars with £60 of fuel per car....hmm profit.....

I agree with the above. I've traded-in a number of cars in my motoring life and have always removed the tax to reclaim and never had a problem.

I'm hoping to do the deal tomorrow, so will definitely be taking the Tax Disc with me and claiming the 7 months back off the government! As for the petrol I'll ask the dealer for a tank as mine is 2/3rd's full and I won't be able to drive 300 plus miles between now and 12pm tomorrow!

Make sure your disc is in the post before end of month or you will loose a full month on refund.

I've swapped batteries on the last two cars I got rid of to traders. Why should I let them have new batteries? (LOL). I've even removed a bullbar from a 4x4 before trade in! Yes, of course you lift the tax disc out of the screen and shove it in your pocket!
