could this be a programmable feature??? Parking in hot weather? (I know you say it happens when opening.)
In the summer, if I am not parking under cover, this is exactly how I LEAVE the car (car theft here in Jordan is almost unheard of). Sometimes I wish I could just press a button on the remote to have the car do it automatically.
Is there any reference to such a facility in the owner's manual? What does the dealer say about it?

As you say CMark this isn't so much a fault as a feature of the Mini remote.

So the new Quality Enhancement is to FIT A PLASTIC BC1 COVER over the top of the BC1 and grease up the connector pins in the door a-pillar connector blocks and also the BC1 connector blocks..
P.S...Please note that after a BC1 has been replaced the following feature has been permanently DELETED from the BC1 software.
DELETED FEATURE:- Opening the windows and sunroof (if fitted)by holding the key in the unlocking position.
The feature remains available from the remote key."

Not strictly relevant to this thread, but not long ago a colleague at work kept having problems with the remote and central locking on his rover.
He mentioned this in the barbers (less than 100 yds from work) and it turned out that the barber was having problems with his Espace, and several mechanics at the bodyshop across the road reported having problems with different makes of car
Then there was a power cut, and the problem went away for a while. The company I work for develops warehousing software, which communicates with scanners by radio refrequency transmissions, and we'd forgot to restart the RF transmitter after the power cut, but when we did, the problems came back.
A few days testing proved to our satisfaction that that was the cause of the problem, and we got back to the RF transmitter manufacturer, who came up with a fix for the problem.
The guys in the bodyshop never got to find out what was causing the problem. Just remember it isn't necessarily a problem with the car.

This sounds like the 'comfort opening' feature - is he accidentally pressing the unlock button on the remote for any length of time when this happens. Only introduced as standard on recent cars, it's described in the manual. He can have it turned off by the dealer if he wants.

HJ thank you and everybody else that has contributed. No reference to 'comfort opening' in my handbook except the process for using the key anti clockwise to open sunroof and windows, and just hold down button for 5 seconds and tailgate opens (it does not) but the roof opens fully along with the windows (BMW engineer was not aware of this, but sales manager has just contacted and guess what he said hold the button down ............................. opens). Must have held button long enough to start the process.

Some of the cars can be programmed to do this, so can't. If it has been set up, you lose the remote boot release. Both are activated by holding the remote open key for >5 secs.
My friendly dealer assures me that comfort opening is standard on 2003 build cars...I'll have to wait and see if it is on mine.
If they do any programming on the car, make sure they reset the window drop on opening feature. A few folk have have cracked the A pillar cover because it'd been reset.

God, I tried. I really did, didn't want to reply to that ;-)
I think a lot of the problems are down to the car being new, and everyone (including the dealers) learning the quirks. I think it's a bit like software. Let someone else buy it and be the guinea pigs and then buy version 2.1 or 3.2 !
