Hi, new contributor here but have been reading for several months.
This morning i was doing a 3 point turn soon after start-up in my 2.0 tdci when a strange noise that can be best described as 'twanging' came from the steering along with a faint vibration. This happened when turning the wheel in each direction at very low speed. The noise was very brief and disappeared as soon as i straightened the wheels Note i was not even at full lock. The car was serviced (independant) last week and was fine over the weekend on several journeys.
I left the car at home today as it was of some concern and went by train, but will have to face the problem upon my return. Now i don't claim to be especially technically minded i'm afraid, but i am keen to learn and was wondering if anybody had any idea what this could be?
I assumed a power steering problem of some kind, but a colleague has mentioned springs.

hi simpo i also have a mk3 mondeo and a few weeks back the wife noticed a creaking like sound coming from steering at low speeds not sure if it is the same as yours but mine was the rubbers in the steering coloum i took of the casing to get to the coloum and sprayed all the joints with tt and whit spray grease and went lock to lock for 10 mins sound all gone again nit sure if same thing .

oakenfold1 - Thanks for the reply, mine also has a very slight creaking sound coming from the steering at low speeds that needs to be addressed. I assume that this is the same problem that your wife was having and (another) something that i will need to get addressed. The strange noise this time, was unrelated and as described was a definite 'twang' which makes me think it is actually the coil spring... Perhaps something for you to look out for?
If its any help i'm at 123k at the moment and touch wood the car has generally been fairy reliable.

Snapped coil spring but you need a inspection just to be sure.

Bigtee, many thanks for your reply and thoughts on the problem. Car taken to local independent garage this morning along with a suggestion of the problem. Will report back what they find. Thanks again. Out of interest, do you think it would have been safe to drive?

Right, problems solved. Turns out it was the spring, snapped at the very top, but otherwise looked in 'as new' condition. Mechanic says that snapping at the top is unusual and it usually occurs at the base of the spring, has anyone else come across this?
Knocking problem sorted out aswell with a bit of grease and general tightening of the steering column apparently. Hope thats the end of it...

Last MOT our KA had both rear coil springs snapped right at the top.

Yep snapping at the top where it is difficult to see is quite common. Bought my Mondeo with this fault... heard the twang but couldn't see any problem until it was jacked up and the wheel taken off.
Snapping at the bottom can be very dangerous as the free broken end has been known to go through a tyre.
