I have a Galaxy 1.9 TDi (115bhp) PD and replaced the MAF sensor in June this year. After a couple of weeks it started to cut out and, turning the ignition off and back on again seemed to reset it and power was restored. The MAF has now gone completely and I have had to buy a replacement.
Has anyone else suffered similar problems and, if so, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

MAF failure is one of the PD engine's few common faults, but they normally last longer than a few months.
Where did you buy the replacement MAF from? There are a lot of fakes about, particularly on internet auction sites. If it was a VW dealer, or even a known brand from a reputable source, there should be a 12 month warranty on the part. Have you tried claiming?
My brother in law had the MAF go on his 115 PD Golf TDI about two years ago. A replacement from a VW dealer was about £70, and it's been fine ever since.

Bought the MAF from a local company that supply Halfords. I have had to purchase a replacement and they are sending the failed unit back to manufacturer for a warranty claim. Cost just under £40 so it may be worth paying a little extra for a genuine part.
What concerns me most is if there is something else on the car that is causing the MAF to fail. I am trying to get a version of the VAGCOM for my laptop so I can research further. Does anyone have a link for this?

MAF failures on these rarely, if ever, cause cutting out. What led you to think that you had a MAF problem?
Have you had the fault-codes read?

Thanks for your response. The engine works fine, plenty of power but then the MAF cuts out and the engines loses power and becomes very sluggish. Got the info re the MAF being faulty from reading messages on forums back in June. At the time the car was permanently without any real grunt. Replaced the MAF and the car turned into a rocket.
Haven't got any fault codes as yet, I am looking to try and obtain VAGCOM for my laptop so I can find the codes etc. Once I have them hopefully the fog will be lifted!! I'll update this posting once I have them.

Just obtained a copy of VAGCOM and connected to car last night. I cleared the fault codes and took the car for a drive. Sure enough it lost power so I reconnected and the same fault codes appeared again. They are: -

Well, looks like the glow-plug's gone on your Eberspacher - but that's not important now...
17965 - exactly as expected... Overboost.
17552 - MAF sensor circuit; open circuit. [You had it disconnected, so no surprise there...]
17978 - Immobilizer active...? Ignore for now.
Right; forget the MAF - it was never that; as said, they can't cause cutting out and, anyway, this isn't cutting out, it's dropping to limp-home - caused by overboost being detected under load.
17965 is very common. Prime cause; coked-up turbo vanes. Remove and have cleaned.
Other causes:- [On a PD] faulty MAP sensor; faulty turbo control ["N75"] solenoid; leaking/crushed vacuum hoses to or from that solenoid; other things too.
Check the flimsy vacuum hoses - every inch; make sure the battery isn't sitting on them. Measure the resistance of the solenoid and check it's feed voltage and the pulse duty cycle if you have the means. Check the vacuum level reaching the turbo's actuator. Actuate the turbo with a Mityvac pump and see if it snaps back when the vac is released.

Quick update.
My wife has just returned from a trip to York and says the car is running like a kangaroo under 30mph. At higher speeds it's fine. Don't know if this is connected but thought it may jog memories etc.

Just been out in the car myself and, yes, very kangaroo like. Disconnected MAF (only been on car for one day) and all seemed fine!! Looks like another faulty/poor quality MAF. Shall be phoning Ford/VW for price of an original part MAF tomorrow.
