Screwloose, Seem's an apt name, all you do in your thread's is mention "Haynes", if i wanted to read a book i would have gone to W H Smith's, i put it on the forum to get a better feedback by helpful people who have done the job first hand not to be told by some idiot to, i quote, "The word Hayne's come's to mind". Why dont you try and be a little bit more helpful online to people that dont know as much as you.

dakarman, id suggest you read around the forum abit more before calling screwloose unhelpful. i think he's just getting abit tired of telling people how to do basic jobs that are widely available in technical manuals (ok so maybe a loose description when a haynes is mentioned) such as the haynes manual.

I'm with Screwloose. Anyone keen on doing a bit of DIY servicing should invest in a Haynes manual (<£15 off ebay). They're nowhere near as good as they used to be, but cars have got so much more complicated. They do however, remain invaluable for just the sort of questions the OP asks and easily pay for themselves - although it takes longer to recoup your money than asking questions for free on here!

Gary, don't want to get caught up in a 'flaming' war here, but Screwloose is one of the most helpful and knowledgable posters on Back Room. His comment was perfectly fair. Anyone who wishes to do a bit of DIY maintenance on their car should use a workshop manual, and Haynes is always a good place to start.
Lets play nice, and maybe even think about an apology.

If you ask such basic questions that it indicates that you are about to walk blindly into a minefield, then "get a map of the mines" IS good advice.
Car technology moves on at an incredible rate, there are always new pitfalls for the unwary and, although of much less use to the experienced, the modern Haynes manual is written exactly for your level. I'm not aware of any alternative publications - maybe you are?
Why do you think most garages have a stack of them? Everybody has to do an unfamiliar job for the first time and reading-up on it is a lot easier that mucking-up on it.

I,and probably most HJ regulars hold him in the highest regard.
If you can`t even locate the oil filter on your car,then I suggest you pay a man who can.

Gary`s a new poster, possibly straight here off the Usenet Forums (as I was a year or so ago)
and looking for a solution to a problem.
Its unfortunate that (of all people) Screwlooses post triggered that reaction because Gary is polite in his request in his initial post.
Coming here does seem at first like being in the place where Patrick McGoohan was chased along by the big balloons coming in off the sea though doesn`t it?
After a while though you adapt and conform which shortly after feels agreeable. You find swearing is gone, along with bad mouthing and shaming. There is seemingly still Puff, Bloat, Snob and Pomp about `badges` ( bow deeply and snap a thwacking salute off the forehead, with biscuit coated fingers) but overall its a better place to be.
But until you adapt you might lash out as its become a conditioned response on the other place, the Usenet.
Gary, Look up Screwloose posts and see he`s one of the real experts here and not a rhetorical `paper tiger` in things under the bonnet.

Gary , your bike spanner will not fit the oil cannister, sorry. You could re-calibrate your imperial feeler gauge, of course.
You could just use a big hammer and a screwdriver, no doubt you have these to hand.

I don't know what Screwloose does for a living but he posts here about 3 times a day (my guess) and always comes up with reliable and relevant info.

I wouldn't actually put it as strongly as offence - my frank style has upset people many times before; but, after 35 years in the motor trade, I've got a skin like a rhinoceros.

Although I help out on this forum from time to time the help and advice we (the advisors) do it freely. I have myelf asked for advice and guidance on many occasions and Screwloose has probably provided me with the most replies. I, and many other people have benefitted from his knowledge and guidance and been extremely grateful. To refer to him as an idioit is an affront and down right insulting. As to the reference ' Haynes' I can assure you as a qualified vehicle technician I use them as an extremely good reference. This forum is an extrememly good back up to that literature.
I suggest if working out how to change an oil filter on a fairly common Ford is too difficult, then the suggestion that Gary read a Haynes manual is quite apt -after all, it is backed up with pictures.
