nice to know there are people out there who know what they are talking about, cheers for the info. it was exactly what i wanted to hear, the car is a peugeot 206 HDI 2.0 turbo 05 plate, and you wouldnt beleive how little the damage is, still drivable, i could pull out the dented quarter panel myself, but been told to leave it for the inspection, i was sold the car by the previous owner and he never told me it was a write off, and i had no reason to suspect because he gave me the log book and service history, even the cash receipt he paid for the car, it was only when my boss did a HPI check that it came back as a catogory B write off, anyway thanks for the info, i owe you more that one

if you get in touch with the seller and find out which insurance company wrote it off and have a word with them you may well find it has been wrongly classified and could b a cat c or even a d, i assume they paid this man out? doesnt make sense that they didnt take the car and the log book.
If they did classify it wrong you may want to ask them to write the appropiate letters to dvla and the abi database and hpi ,this can take quite a while to sort out mind so if you intend keeping the car you might decide not to bother,one problem might be reinsuring it though

Whoops! If this is a cat B write off, then doesn't it belong to the insurance company that paid out?
As BB says; they can't sell a cat B on - and if it was a 3rd-party claim, then it shouldn't have been written off, merely damages paid to the value etc..
Something dodgy is going on here. To write off an '05-plate would suggest a bit more damage than just a bent wing. Has it been on a jig?

screwloose some insurance companies will sell cat b cars on but the better ones insist the shell is cut up and even insist on photos of the cut up shell,i believe its a condition of being in the abi that these cat b cars are indeed not put back on the road ,however not all insurance companies are in the abi ,its also a condition of law that 3rd party write offs are advised to swansea but invariably arent and self insured wrecks by lease companies hire companies etc are advised to swansea again its the law but i have seen plenty of well smacked up stuff lately from a large plc listed as cat x
therefore who knows the story behind the OP"s car

there was no mention of any history on other claims/accident`s on this car. nore any other damage to it. although the previous owner did say he was going to sell it to a car breakers yard,, thats where i stepped in and offered more for it

no, the car drives perfectly, no flood damage everything clean/tidy.. service history, 26k on the clock all vin no`s intact front side and rear vin`s just cannot get my head around it. the wife loves it to bit`s and has declaired that it is her`s shame you cannot see it

When your colleage did the £5 HPI check, did he also use the VIN and log book ref? Number plate alone might be showing cat b but what about the other info you put into the HPI check? For £5 you could do it again yourself. Maybe the colleague got the reg wrong - but why was it going to a breakers yard????

he did a £35 hpi check giving only the number plate, the reason it was going to a breakers yard is due to his insurance company`s instructions, he though he would get more money if he advertised it in the local, thats where i stepped in, the breakerd offered £175, i gave him £250 for it and drove it away, (private road ocifer honestly )

You saying you got a two year old 206HDI that is fully roadworthy other than a dented wing for £250?

An intact '05 206HDi - even a cat B - is worth more like £1750 to a breaker than £175? Something very wrong here.

HPI checks via the RAC site are £5.
Sounds like this cars was meant to go to the scrap yard and that is probably where it will still go. I fear you may have lost £250. A two year old car for £250 IS to good to be true.

It would go there and they would get money for it to payback something of the sum they had paid out to the original owner for the damage. They weren't giving it to the scrap yard but OP says he put in a better offer. Excellent luck to him! I am going to Belgium for a few days to get some decent beer down me and I hope, when I get back, that I read of a good outcome to this! I am not holding my breath. As rft70 has pointedout a driveable 2 year old car, with clear legal ownership and no come-backs, is unlikely at £250

i dont ming either way. if it turns out i can get it on the road exellent !. but if i cannot, i can still sell spares on ebay, so i will not lose out on it, it`s just luck i got the friday ad on a very early thursday, and i will keep everyone informed weather it`s good or bad news

I still cannot see how it was the other person's to sell if written off. As you say there is money to be had from stripping it - that's what the insurance company probably planned.
What I would want to know is why it is cat B write-off.... regardless of cost there is some history to the car and it might not be as safe or as driveable as you assume.

No news at the moment. Still waiting to hear about the log book/letter. Repais underway. I am having it done up top notch. Just to make sure they don't find fault.

g`day chap`s, good news, dvla has sent a reply (eventualy ), it say`s "i cannot have a registration document because this vehicle has been notified as being a catagory B insurance write off, however we have updated our records, and show you as the new registered keeper, and subject to a vic check, we will issue a new v5c document" so there you are, dont go taking the word of what they say as gospel,, by the way,, i have been in contact with the insurance company who wrote it off {8< snip} and they never saw the car, the garage the car was recovered to sent pictures/emails of the damage,

Thanks for the update. Does this mean that you are now the legal owner of a car you can break for spares and sell the bits, or the legal owner of the car that you can repair, have the repairs checked and put back on the road? What is a V5c?

yes i am now the legal owner and the repairs are underway, just the rear quarter then respray,

Well it makes a farce of the insurers having these categories for write offs if the regulations aren't enforced. Category B means that the car should have been broken for spares and never been allowed to be put back on the road.
Anyway its a good result for you daddykins, I assume that you intend to keep the car for yourself. I wouldn't like to try selling a Category B write off on to someone else.

i originaly bought the car for the wife. but it`s too nice for her, so if she say`s so i will have it. we will be keeping the car for quite a while. also, the registration document will by law have the information printed on it (this vehicle has been deemed a catagory B insurance loss ) i can have this removed after three mot inspections

thank you for the advice. it will be heeded. out of all this fact finding and surfing the web, i cannot beleive the insurers just rely on photographs , so much for assesing the value of repairs, this car i bought looked very badly damaged and i did think i would have to break it up for spares, but when i t cutted all the black tyre marks off and cleaned it up i was amazed. needless to say, i have sent new pic`s to the insurance company concearned and also the dvla, so that may have influenced there decicion. so far i have spent £34 new wing, £105 for new quarter panel, and £60 for two doors, just repaint to pay for now, then mot and vic test

hello all, i to have purchased a category b write off in the past a 54 plate vauxhall astra a similar story to your own. very minor front offside damage but was bought from salvage auction although displayed as cat c, until i took it for vic check after doing repairs, was informed about cat b status but again had no real problems registering just an educated idiot working at local dvla office that couldnt understand the concept of write off categorys, was registered and taxed that day. so goes to show the system doesnt work as its meant to. thank pink fluffy dice for grey areas.am still using car a year later . at less than half of top book value.
