Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - movilogo
Let me tell you the reason for asking this. My license is less than 2 years old. So, any 2 speeding offenses (2x3 points) will mean automatic cancellation!

My regular commuting doesn't involve motorway journey. However, often I'm on motorway on weekends.

I tend not to drive over 80 mph (indicated on speedo) ever. Of course, I could always stick to 70 mph but for long journey, 80 mph over 70 mph really makes the journey time shorter.

Since, most speedos over estimate speed, should I be ok if I constantly maintain an 85 mph indicated speed? (I'm not talking of temporary speed restricted areas).

Just wondering how cops and speed cameras consider 80 mph on motorway as an offence!
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - Marc4Six
ACPO guidelines suggest a 10% plus 2 MPH prosecution threshold i.e. at 70 no prosecutions below 79 MPH, so at 80 indicated you should be safe from prosecution. Note however they are only guidelines.

I believe speed cameras only operate at road works (i.e. temp speed restrictions) on motorways.

IMHO you would be 99% safe from being pulled over by police at an indicated 85 MPH, but there is always a small risk, speeding is an absolute offence.
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - james86
Personally I maintain an indicated speed of 85 - 90, sometimes even a bit more if quiet, on the M25, M1 & M62 all the time and have never had any problems. I have done 20000 miles already this year virtually all on the motorway (usually a 20 mile a day motorway commute and one day a week a 240 mile commute to another office).

A speed camera will generally catch you at 79 true speed (sometimes lower) so 85 indicated is probably pushing it a little bit. If there are cameras I wouldn't go through faster than 80 indicated.

Just use your common sense if there are police cars about / accidents / very busy etc and you should be ok.
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - teabelly
The normal prosecution threshold is 10% + 2mph ie 79 mph. If you are doing an indicated 80 you're probably only really doing 75 ish. I'd stick with an indicated 80 ish in clear dry conditions. If traffic is heavy or weather is bad then I'd be making sure I was doing less than the 70 mph mark. If you haven't been driving long then exceeding the speed limit by a wide margin isn't a sensible thing to be doing anyway. The time saving is small and not worth the risk of ending up banned and having to retake your test. Your insurance will go through the roof if this happens. It won't do you any harm to drive a little slower for the first 2 years.

Do all cars have same speedo error? What about those which display speed digitally?
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - Ruperts Trooper
Speedos on older cars were often the full 10% out but modern cars are usually much more accurate, often varying only by tyre tread wear and marginal differences between the various tyre homologations for a particular model.

In your circumstances, I'd stick to 78.
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - DP
It really irritates me when the police drive along the motorway at 65 (deliberately, I'm sure) and nobody will overtake them. Very effective rolling roadblocks they make too. I'll breeze past with 80 showing to enjoy miles of empty motorway ahead, and they never even look twice. I wouldn't do it at 90 though.

ISTRC from sat nav that the Mondeo's 80 mph is in fact about 74 mph.

Cheers

Nobody here can tell you 100% for sure but imo if you were doing an indicated 23mph (so probably 22mph true) in a 20mph limit area you probably are OK. Not all forces follow NPCC guidelines on speeding enforcement though.

How to work out your true speed? Get a passenger to count the number of 1/10 km white posts you pass in five minutes at a given indiated speed. You need to work to keep it constant while still concentrating, so you need an empty motorway. Especially soon after passing your test.

The number turns into speed as below.

Or borrow a GPS unit and compare the GPS speed to your speedo. Drive at a real 77 mph and you'll be fine in a 70 limit.

I was flashed by a camera several years back in a car with a digital speedo. I didn't see the camera until the flash looked down and was doing 83mph. When the ticket came it said the same speed. Telling the Policeman who stops you that you checked on a motoring forum and they said it was OK wouldnt help you.
I think you know the answer yourself to be honest.
Different Police Forces will have their own set of standards as laid down by their Chief Constable.
Why not just stay inside the limit and have a less stressful journey.
One Chief famously said that doing 31mph in a 30 limit is an offence and would be prosecuted.

If you decide to check your speedo using a GPS, remember to do the check on a level stretch of road. A standard GPS measures speed over the ground, but doesn't take the effect of hills, tailwinds or any other factor into account.

Having done this calibration exercise, surely it would make sense to drive below - not at - the indicated speed that gives a true 70mph, just in case you had a lapse in concentration and slipped over the limit?

Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - local yokel
A tailwind would only make a difference if the driven wheels left the ground, at which point you may not be spending much time checking the speedo. That's the good thing about flying - no speed cameras, and you can go at 250 kts in VFR if you wish.

10% plus 2 was devised many years ago mostly for when you were stopped by a police car. Nips are now being issued for 32, 43, 54, 65, and 76 miles per hour. Speeding is speeding 31 is an offence and the kit these days can measure that accurately. Visit Pepipoo.co.uk and read. Regards Peter
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - BobbyG
I don't want to be a bore but if you rely on your license and can only take two convictions then I suggest you make sure you are well within the limit.
Remember this law is there because you, as a new driver, do not have years of driving experience behind you.

I live near Glasgow and regularly comute to my brothers near Cambridge. I used to see how fast i could do it in but in doing so I was taking unneccesary risks.

This year I got a new car with cruise control. I set this at a GPS speed of (I think) 76mph and over the course of the journey I possibly was maybe an hour at the most longer. But I arrived refreshed and, more importantly, I did not slow down for speed cameras, traffic patrols as I was pretty confident I would not get done for doing this speed. I did not need to get there any earlier.

Some people have a couple of pints and are willing to get behind the wheel, others won't. No one knows exactly when they are on the limit or just over it.

However, the day they are over the limit and get caught and face losing their license, is when all the regrets come in and the realisation that they didn't need that extra pint, or in your case, the extra 15mins or whatever you saved.

Maybe I am just getting older or maybe I am just wiser and realise that if I lose my license, I could lose a helluva lot more as well.

Aside from all the politics, I'd strongly advise the same as most. Those first 2 years are probationary - if you get 6 points that licence is gone forever. After 2 years you'd have to be driving horrendously to get your licence permanently revoked. You're FAR more likely to be pulled in an urban area, so stick religiously to 30 and 40mph limits. Motorways and dual-carriageways are more flexible, but if you see PC Plod parked up with a radar, don't do what I did the other day and blast past at 85! (still waiting for my ticket!)
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - Lud
Of course I don't think people should get fines or points on their licences. I have managed to keep these within bounds so far on mine by being normally prudent and observant, just as I have generally avoided running up trees or into other vehicles by the same means.

It isn't reckless or insouciant behaviour that I seem to favour. It is fluid behaviour. The thing that gets on my nerves about this conservative, better-safe-than-sorry approach to, damn it, speed limits - not reckless or careless or aggressive driving - is that it tends to slow all traffic down by 10mph in the short term and impose a rigid, doleful, processional quality on us all. Among other things this is bound to distract people from the task of driving by seeming to make concentration less necessary.

By analogy, you could say that it makes the traffic more viscous, turning it from brake fluid to thick treacle.

It's an aesthetic thing. People drive better if they are properly awake. There's nothing wrong with working hard to make progress provided the real rules are observed.

This is completely false.

What actually happens is that if you get 6 points, your full license is revoked.

This is NOT permanant. It is NOT gone for ever. It is NOT a ban. You can re-apply for a provisional immediatly, and retake your practical driving test whenever you wish.

It is possible, test centres permitting, to be back on the road less than a month after having your license revoked under the New Drivers legislation.

Albeit with 6 points already on the license.
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - GregSwain
This is completely false.

I think you might've misinterpreted what I was trying to say. In order to regain your status as a driver, you'd need to pass theory and practical tests all over again. Hence, THAT licence is gone forever, you'll need to earn another one before you can go out and drive. Bearing in mind the number of bad habits I picked up in my first 2 years behind the wheel, I wouldn't fancy anyone's chances of passing 1st time without some refresher lessons. All unnecessary time and expense, and MUCH more sensible to stay on the right side of the law and keep your original licence rather than having to go out and pass your tests again.

"If you decide to check your speedo using a GPS, remember to do the check on a level stretch of road. A standard GPS measures speed over the ground, but doesn't take the effect of hills, tailwinds or any other factor into account."

Of course it takes tailwinds into account. the speed is the speed tailwinds or not. And height variation makes not a jot of diffrence. The GP unit is measuring distance/time so is totaly accurate on a straight. Its not on bends as it measures things in straight lines and so "cuts corners"

The flash on Truvelo devices, at least the earlyish ones, may have been subdued compared to same generation Gatsos but it was not invisible.

I was caught by one in Harlestone Northants c2002. The flash was visible enough for me to spend a fortnight or so on NIP alert but never heard anything. In those days they still used film so presumably it's run out.

No, and none of us are ever likely to be under current policy.

The current guidelines for speed enforcement are 10% over the limit plus 2mph.

ergo

30 limit enforcement starts at 36 mph
40 limit enforcement starts @ 47mph
50 limit enforcement starts @ 58mph
60 limit enforcement starts @ 69mph
70 limit enforcement starts @ 79mph

As anyone who daily drives on the Motorways knows, the de facto speed limit in this country in good driving conditions is an indicated 85-90 mph, which allows for the above margins of tolerance and a speedo which is a few% optimistic, as they all are.

The manager of our local speed scamera partership has publicly announced on local TV that he would pay the fines of anyone who could prove that they had been prosecuted within the 35 MPH threshold.

Reminds me of a time I went to a friends party and was introduced to this chap. Once he found out what I did for a living he proceeded with his sob story about how he had been done for 32 MPH in a 30 limit. As the conversation went on and he told me about his car I realised that it was me that had inflicted his pain. I couldn't contain myself and told him that it was me and that that as I remember it the speed had been 48 MPH. His face was a picture!

So I am afraid that a lot of these sob stories should be taken with a pinch of salt.

As you are effectively still learning, it is probably best not to play the percentages game, hoping not to get caught and risking losing your license in the process.

There are cameras everywhere on motorways: average speed cameras, camera vans on bridges, etc.

Drive slightly within the limit (indicated 75mph max), and maybe use the extra 5-10 mph for overtaking slower traffic. The actual differences in journey time are not that great for 5-10mph increments.

The only sensible answer to this question is: - if you don't want to risk getting done for speeding, don't exceed 70 mph. Avon and Somerset Police had a campaign a year or two ago where they announced that they might book anyone exceeding the limit, even by 1 mph.

Funny, my CVT Punto can go relatively (indeed a relative term!) quickly to 45-50 mph - so no problems overtaking in urban areas or a dizzy old dear in a Datsun (classic Clarksonism) tootling along in a NSL.

The little problem is the 50-70 jump - I really need to plan overtaking on motorways with military precision; there's a stretch of motorway on my daily commute with a slight incline and if I dont keep the power on and hit the outside lane to get around an artic, for example, then I'm marooned there for ever...

Maybe it depends on whether the police have something more pressing to deal with. I got pulled by for doing 80 on an otherwise empty motorway at 04:45 a.m. Probably had been a quiet night for the officer who pulled me over. He gave a severe verbal lashing laden with all kinds of threats but then left me to go on my merry way. I suppose I should be grateful.
Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - Pete M
Here in New Zealand, there is generally a tolerance of about 10km/h above the posted speed limits, (100km/h open road, and 80, 60, and 50 limits elsewhere).

Travelling at 80mph, which is around 130km/h, would get you close to an automatic licence suspension of 28 days, and a very large fine with demerit points.

Most drivers here try to stay around 110km/h on the open road as this reduces the amount the government can extort when you are caught by a speed camera. Note, I said when, not if. You should be grateful in UK that you can drive at sensible speeds on motorways and open roads. I lived in UK for five years and was never stopped or fined for speeding, but coming back here required a real change of attitude. Now you have to watch your speed obsessively, as the nanny state here has focussed on this to the exclusion of other issues such as driving ability and standards.

A recent campaign to reduce speed around schools has resulted in less tolerance. I have before me an NIP for a scamera van fine for 58km/h which is 35mph. This is on a local street which is long and straight and about twice as wide as the average UK road, so there are no visibility issues. The fine was $30 (around UKP10) but no demerit points. I paid up without a murmur, as I agree with the idea to keep speed down around schools, and I was guilty of lack of concentration on my speed.
The van was there again today, and I saw it (from the opposite end to the camera) in plenty of time, but staying close to 50km/h in the Jag with the cold enrichment raising the idle required concentration.
Needless to say I took the opportunity to test the headlamp flashers a few times in the next minute...

I was once in the car with a friend was pulled over on the M5 by a police car who had been parked on a bridge with a hand-held radar gun (this is a few years ago), who had the cruise control set at 95. The police officer told us that they would only pull you over if you were doing 90 or above. Obviously, this may well be out of date of this type of enforcement is rare nowadays.

However, Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership who put mobile camera vans on the M4 at rush hour state that they will prosecute from 79mph (the guideline minimum speed) plus.

So I guess it really depends on how the limit's being enforced, and maybe even the discretion of the individual doing it. If i'm doing over 70 (not that I ever have, obviously) I am well aware of the fact that there would be no injustice if I were to be punished.

I generally only ever cruise at an indicated 70 as it saves petrol and makes so little difference in journey time it isn't worth burning up the extra petrol.

The only exception is for journeys of 250 miles or more, when the time saving (half an hour) by cruising at an indicated 80 justifies the extra petrol, effort and noise.

Knocking 30 minutes off the journey does make quite a big difference. However, since the Accord drinks fuel like a cruise ship, I tend to stick the cruise on 77 indicated.

There are loads of cases of 32/33 and even 31mph getting a NIP. Nother Wales and Cumbia appear to be the tight ones and the 20 limit across the bridge in London ( Specs ). The new precs on the A77 to Prestwick from Glasgow are pretty mean. Regards Peter

With sat nav, it tells you how fast you are travelling.

Probably the best way to calibrate a speedometer - my speedo is only 1 mph out - a toyota carina;

With the factory fit satnav in my Vectra, it's not in the standard menu settings; you have to go into the supervisor mode settings to obtain that info.

NIP just received for 84mph on the A14 east of A1 two weekends ago. Saturday morning, clear road, good weather, scamera van over opposite carriageway, on overbridge. Long bend, saw him too late. I reckoned my speed was reading 86mph - ish. Hands up but nothing more than cynical revenue generation. Just hope its a FP - or they forget...

"but nothing more than cynical revenue generation"

With just the tiniest element of Law enforcement as well ? ,,,:-)

A14, like the A43 or A50, is not a Motorway but feel feels like oneuntil you spot the odd flat junction with a local lane or farm track.

Rigorous enforcement justified IMHO. In a more sane environment the limit would, as in France, drop to 50 or even 40 over the real hazards but DfT guideleines discourage the use of limits over short distances (though there are examples on the A5 at Watford Gap and again in Shropshire) .

Indeed. Hands up, as I said...;)

Wait and see if you're offered a speed awareness course.

Two years ago caught on M4 in south wales at exactly 80. Was allowed to take speed awareness course. Have SlowedDown.

Presume that means another 3 points would result in a ban. If not what is the issue.

None of us wants points but if we break the law its inevitable we could get some.

Best way to avoid points is to obey the law.

Why is it whenever people don't like legislation they refer to the, 'nanny state' ?

Presumably some would prefer no M.O.T. : we can all decide if our car is safe.

No driving test : we can all judge if we are competent

No speed limits : we can all judge what a safe speed limit is

At least after a while there would be fewer cars on the road after the crashes.

To return to the post as skidpan puts - Best way to avoid points is to obey the law.

If only it was that simple. A camera will not know that conditions are poor, and the posted legal limit is dangerously high. I know many roads where a 30mph limit is posted, but 40mph would probably be safe, whereas a bit further on the 30mph limit changes to 40 or 50 mph just before a winding stretch, and no-one but a fool would exceed 30 mph. That is because the limits are set according to guidelines, and presumably they are flawed. I've seen road markings that possibly cause crashes, as they are confusing, only to be replaced some years later with new ones. I know some that leave me very confused, and I am probably not alone.

The prosecution threshold will be around 79. Given average speedo accuracy yours was reading well over 80. If its a first offence then you'll almost certainly be offered a course. If you've got enough already for 3 more to seriously spoil your day then tough - unless of course you've got serious defence. But then if you had you wouldn't be asking questions here.

I was done for 78mph on the M6 in February last year, I was under the impression of 10% + 2 was within the speeding limits but obviously I'm wrong. I went on a speed awareness course and the general concensus was that speeding is speeding no leeway given if they don't feel like giving leeway.

Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - curlz1987

i was under the impression that it was true speed 77 on average speed cameras and 79 on speed guns. every 1s spedo is different for each make of car 81 on my dash is 77 true speed try downloading a speed test on googleplay quite accurate. also if you reset your average mph on dash board while doing 81 it shows 77 on average. bmw 528 e39. 4 mph out at 81

0% + 1mph is speeding and is illegal - it's seen as more practical to allow "leeway" in many cases.

Under ACPO guidelines 10% + 2mph is the start threshold for prosecution - it's 10% + 1mph that's within their normal guidelines.

Note that ACPO doesn't apply in Scotland, not all forces use it in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - and importantly it can always be overridden in compelling incidents.

To return to the OP's origonal post subject.

You passed your test less than 2 years ago.

If you collect 6 points within 2 years of passing your test you are back to L plates.

Paying a driving instructor to give you remedial lessons.

The theory test all over again.

A practical driving test with an examiner who will know that are an ex- banned driver and will expect you to drive as an experienced driver, not a learner..

Still fancy pushing your luck with the speed limots do you?

I know because as an instructor I used to re-train loads like you.

And very good money it was too!

Good - very pleased for him - I still think it was worth while my posting as a warning to recently qualified drivers.

Most of them don't know or have forgotten this 6 points in 2 years law.

You would be surprised how many didn't know about it/had forgotten about it before they got 6 points dished out to them. I know-I used to ask them why they were having to take their test again!

Anyone ever caught for doing 80 mph on motorway? - HGV ~ P Valentine

I always find this sort of subject interesting, because people base their opinion on what they have gotten away with so far ! it is a bit like someone falling of a roof of a high story building and thinking he is not going to hit the floor until he actually hits it.

Speed limits are black and white so lets get that out of the way, and yes you can be done for doing 71 on the motorway or dual carriageway, you can be done for doing 61 on a single carriageway, and 31 in a built up area, but the police rarely stop you as long as you drive a manner that does not attract their attention.

I myself got done for doing 31 in a 30 zone, the thing about driving for a living is that you hear stories from other drivers, I heard from some one that a relation of theirs got done for speeding in a 20 zone., going at 23 mph. Later on read somewhere that the cameras in London are set for 30 even in the 20 zones, for this I think the main reason is that they cannot be set for diff speeds at set times.

The reason they do not stop people on motorways for exceeding the 70 mph on the M25 for example is that they rely on the cameras on the overhead gantries to police drivers and will only stop you if you give them reason to notice you, it does not make your speeding right, or within the law but they cannot stop everyone, and it is simple weight of numbers and not your right break the law.

Despite pressure from employers I do not exceed the speed limit, which makes it awkward because most other drivers do.
