Overfilling petrol tank in hot weather - Chicken Vindaloo
I'm getting this third hand but SWMBO's boss had a bit of an incident yesterday. She'd filled her car up and left it in direct sun. Petrol was leaking out from the cap at a fair rate.

A bypasser told her to phone the fire brigade. After she'd done this, a friendly local coach driver told her to hang fire as he'd sort it out for her, him having seen this sort of thing many times before. He was true to his word, but nobody found out exactly what he did.

Any ideas as to what should be done in these situations? I wouldn't want to take the petrol cap off to release the pressure. This serves as a reminder to us all not to brim our tanks in this hot weather.

I would open the cap there's no danger involved.

I'd look to see if it was possible to push the car into, or create, some shade to cure the orig problem. Give it an hour to cool off, then crack the cap gently, with perhaps some newspaper on the ground to catch a spill.

Just don't do it with a burning cigarette in your mouth.

A lit cigarette is mostly ok. Just don't light one - the match and/or lighter will definitely make things go bang.

I remember being taught in chemistry at school that the temperature of a cigarette end is lower than the flashpoint of petrol. You can apparently drop a burning cigarette end in a puddle of petrol and it will go out.

When you would be in trouble is when you light it as you say, or if the lit end hits something and produces sparks. These sparks are hot enough to ignite the vapours.

I would really like to try this one day.

I think that?s probably the best thing you could do LY, pretty much because there is little else that can be done.

The handbook will have told them not to brim fill the tank for a reason, this is it. It?s why I find it odd when you see those people at the petrol station, with the nozzle just in the tank, dribbling it in. An accident waiting to happen.

Giving the car a good, hard rock usually sorts it. That shakes air from the expansion space above the fuel into the neck; so that there's pressurized air against the cap and not pressurized petrol.

That sounds like what he might have done - I shall pass this on to the party involved. Mind you, I would hope she's not going to do the same thing again...!

Am I missing a trick here ?

Why didn't she just go for a short drive ? Driving about 1 mile would have got shot of about 200 ml, bish bosh, problem sorted.

Providing spark from ignition didnt blow the whole thing up first.

Did this once myself at a forecourt about 10 years ago. Leak was under the car, someone said from overflow pipe. Had to push car away from spillage and forecourt and attendants dumped sand on the overflow once leak stopped, let it stand for evaporation to get rid of any excess/ fumes on car then start it.

Apologised profusely and looked very sheepish.

Not the most likely scenario though. Time and time again when I was a Yoof with my yoofy mates we would overfill the tanks on our motorbikes (yes we were that stupid) which is obviously directly above the engine / ignition and we just got on with it.

Phone the fire brigade, what a load of rhubarb and custard.

I've done it recently. Dumps the excess out of the overflow pipe which emerges under the swingarm. Somewhat embarassing.
