Clio 1.6 RXE not ticking over when cold - aliswan
Help! Drove my car home on Monday evening - not a hint of anything being wrong with it. Went to drive it yesterday (the following day) and it just would not tick over - had to keep my foot on the accelerator or the engine just died on me. Managed to limp to the garage today and the car was ticking over nicely by the time I got there (about 1.5 miles and a bit of a traffic jam from home). Was hoping that it would be something simple like a temp sensor ( have had this happen before and the symptoms are similar) but the garage have phoned to say that they have been working on it all day are not sure what the problem is. What are diagnostic machines for? They have suggested it could be something to do with the accelerator and is likely to be expensive to repair. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Wife's '98 Clio 1.6 RXE has had this problem intermitently since we have had it (3.5 years) we were told that it could be a problem with, I think, electronic control of the idle via a potentiometer on the throttle body, the problem has been infrequent enough to not bother getting it fixed. Seems to help using good quality petrol, we used to live near a Tesco, wife would fill up there and get Clubcard points every week, since we moved (our local garage is now BP - Nectar points!) the problem has lessened.

Thanks for the above reply. The garage have cleaned the throttle body and it is running a bit better now - absolutley fine when engine is warm, but it still 'stalled' twice on the way home. I may take your advice and fill up elsewhere in future - as your wife used to, I too tend to shop and fill up at our local Tesco. Thanks again.
