Toyota Corolla Verso - Tinted windows & car sickness prone child - HokkaHokka

Hello,

I am looking at used Toyota Verso's and am favoring the SR spec trim probably around 07 or 08 in terms of age. Every examply I've seen on the market comes with tinited rear passenger windows.

I have a 3 year old who is very prone to car sickness, if anyone has any direct experience, I would be interested to know if tinted windows are benificial or likely to set her off.

I've read on other sites that passengers can feel a little claustraphobic with tinited windows...

Thanks

HH

My guess is tinted windows won't help. Biggest thing with motion sickness is moving the head in non-motion directions and getting confused input from the inner ears.

I'd try getting her a toy dashboard and steering wheel, and getting her to 'help'. Such toys are cheap so if it doesn't work, you've not lost much. Bike riding is probably better, but I'm guessing she's too young to know how.

Hello,

Thanks very much for your input!

What I really want to know is if the tinted windows are likely to make her car sickness worse?

If anyone has any experience of this, I would be really grateful.

I'm not being funny or anything, but do you drive smoothly and brake gently etc:

It makes a real difference to passenger comfort.

Just wondering here, in line with Miroku's post...is your present car an automated manual...the gearchanges of which are among the worse its ever been my displeasure to feel especially if driven briskly.

Hokka I am an adult that suffers badly with travel sickness that is related to being partially deaf. I'm only ok if I'm driving. What helps though, is a car with fresh air, no sudden cornering, breaking and an automatic as there is no gearchanging as such and defintely not tinted windows as your eyes need to be able to tell your brain what is causing the motion sickness and then it tends to stop? Certain strong smells in the car would make me sick, not having enough fluid or food. Don't try and distract them by reading or looking at something, otherwise that can bring it on, music and sitting in coolness basically is the best way :)

My old Avensis CDX has tinted rear side windows and it doesn't make a lot of difference in my/ my passengers' experience - they look darker from the outside but the view from inside isn't all that different. Food, smells, reading, temperature, swerving round corners etc would have more of a nauseating effect. I also prefer to be higher up with a good view forward and an airy cabin - something that the Verso would probably give you.

However if you find the windows are an issue, is there a specific reason why it has to be an SR model? The T2, T3 and TR versions don't always have the tinted windows.

One needs a steady distant horizon to look at, for a starter and if possible.

I used to teach people to fly and had one who was sick when doing aerobatics or sitting thru mine! The answer was a pair of elsticated wrist bands with a small plastic hemisphere sewn on the inner surface to be placed on a pressure point on the inside of the wrist. Sold as C bands

For a child one could make a wrist band with a coffee bean or a small peanut to act on the pressure point. They worked for my student and you are only £6 out of pocket if they don't work for your child. Good luck!

Hello

Thanks for all of the feedback!!!

so far I'm getting the impression that the tinted windows aren't likely to make her car sickness worse.

I am currently driving a '98 Mondeo which isn't the quietest or the smoothest so hopefully a 07 or 08 Verso will be better - especially one with air con.
