Peugeot Expert 2.0 HDi - Peugeot Expert won't start - Philip D

Now the weather is getting colder the van will not start in the morning. It turns over fine, but will not fire. It will start with a tow, then run all day. Next day it will be the same thing in the morning. Any clue what to look for?

It could be the battery needs replacing.Sometimes there is enough current to turn over the car but the electrics don't then have enough power to start it.

Try putting the battery on charge overnight and then starting it in the morning.If it starts then you need a new battery.

I have seen a few cars with this type of fault so its worth checking out.

While I'm met the 'cranks but not enough energy to fire' situation, it's rare.

Given the car is a diesel and it has got colder, failure of the glow plugs or energising circuit would be my first suspicion.

My similarly engined 307 packed up the other day. Called out the AA and it was fuel starvation, can't think how/why. There was over 1/4 of a tankl of fuel but it wouldn't start. Patrol removed a big plastic trim/cover from the top of the engine, found the squeezy bulb that primes the fuel system (at the back of the engine bay), primed the engine which started and has run relaibly for several weeks since. Mystery

SFAIK the only thing electrical involved in the starting of a diesel is the the gloplugs and the starter motor, there is no coil or spark plugs.

No, no spark plugs in a diesel. The heat of the compressed air ignites the fuel. Usually it's an electronic control unit that senses temperature and controls the injection (if the fuel is injected later in the stroke the air in the cylinder is compressed more ergo more heat) instead of glow plugs nowadays.
